Teddington was first permanently settled by the Saxons and in 971 the land was given to the Abbey of Westminster. By the 14th Century, Teddington had a population of around 100-200, with most of the land belonging to the Abbot of Westminster and the rest rented by tenants working the fields. In the 1500s, Teddington and Bushy Park formed part of the hunting grounds for Cardinal Wolsey and Henry VIII when staying at Hampton Court Palace.
Nowadays, Teddington has a thriving High Street made up of independent boutiques and stores, restaurants, pubs, takeaways, book shops and banks. There are several hotels by the train station and the River Thames and there is also a library and museum within the town. Several offices can be found in Teddington and are home to direct marketing and IT companies. Next to Bushy Park lies a scientific centre which includes the National Physical Laboratory and National Measurement Office.
The Landmark Arts Centre, an independent charity, can also be found in Teddington, alongside several primary and secondary schools. There are many sports clubs within the town, including a cricket club, hockey club, dragon boat racing club and canoe club.
Hampton is located on the North bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Made up of three communities known as Hampton, Hampton Wick and Hampton Hill, the area is home to a variety of local businesses.
The Hampton Water Treatment Plant, built in the 1850s, is one of the largest capacity water treatment facilities in Europe, producing a third of London’s daily water supply. A group of 17 offices and warehouse units belonging to the plant are located in the South-West of the town.
Hampton Hill has a beautiful High Street filled with cafés, boutiques, butchers and bakeries, as well as a theatre. Many services such as hairdressers, dentists, salons, nurseries and mechanics have also made Hampton their home.
As well as the vast array of shops, Hampton has a range of pubs, restaurants, delis and takeaways to ensure its inhabitants never go hungry! There are also several sports and leisure activities available, including gyms and the open-air heated swimming pool, accessible all year round.
