 New Malden developed thanks to the arrival of the trainline from Waterloo in 1846. The town suffered bomb damage during the blitz in 1940 when the Germans dropped approximately 150 bombs. In 1965, the boroughs of Malden and Coombe and Surbiton merged with Kingston upon Thames to form the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames.
