Walton-on-Thames is situated within the Borough of Elmbridge. A market town with a long history, the site was originally home to the Celts before the Roman invasion under Julius Caesar.
The town appears in the Domesday book of 1087 as “Waletona” and was held jointly by feudal overlords Edward de Sarisber and Richard de Tonbridge. Between the River Thames and the town centre lies the Old Manor House, once home to John Bradshaw, the Lord President, who was responsible for the trials of King Charles I in the 17th century.
In the present day, the town has a thriving commercial centre, first built in the 1960s. The Heart Shopping Centre is comprised of over 45 stores and restaurants, including bakeries, high-end fashion and jewellery stores and supermarkets. The centre is home to many branded retailers and the public library, and a variety of independent and chain restaurants populate New Zealand Avenue and the High Street.
The outskirts of Walton-on-Thames are home to a range of construction, automotive and landscaping businesses with large office buildings as well as the North Weylands Industrial Park.
