Chertsey Abbey was founded in 666 AD by Eorcenwald, Bishop of London. The Abbey and town were later sacked by the Danes in the 9th Century, who left their mark on the area in the name of the neighbouring village of Thorpe. The town appeared in the Domesday Book as Certesi and it grew to become one of the largest Benedictine Abbeys in England, until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536.
Guildford Street in the centre of town is home to a variety of restaurants, supermarkets, pubs and cafés. Care homes, gyms and schools can also be found in the town centre, as well as a number of independent shops and boutiques. Along the River Thames, there are a couple of marine shops and hotels and a museum can be found on Windsor Street.
Chertsey is also the location for the Head Office of the Compass Group and the European Head Office for Samsung.
On the northern boundary of the town lies Thorpe Park, a theme park with regular connections to Chertsey Station and to Staines.
Chertsey Industrial Park, in the centre of town, includes 8 business units and the Hanworth Trading Estate comprises several industrial and trade units. Chertsey Town F.C. plays at Alwyns Lane, in the North East of the town, and to the South one can find the Great Cockrow Railway, a miniature railway opened in 1968.
We love our customers, so feel free to ask us lots of questions.
